The second installment of paranormal romance “The Basilisk’s Creed” by Eme Strife continues Eli’s desperate attempt to remain afloat while her world falls apart around her. Bouncing between Eli’s perspective and soul reaper Matt’s, we are taken through the obliteration of the Atlantic Ocean under extremely unusual circumstances.
Volume Two jumped right into the story without giving any background on previous events from Volume One (which I previously reviewed here). This second novella focuses heavily on the destruction of the ocean and its repercussions, but it was incredibly difficult to follow. Generally in a series, each book briefly recaps what’s been happening to catch the reader up on the story, but this one neither clarifies what occurred nor explains what is going on.
Eli and Matt’s unlikely romance remains marginally amusing despite the overly sexual language and its combination with religious terms that are at times inappropriate. Eme Strife does a good job of keeping readers mystified, and the story itself has a lot of potential. It just seems that it would be more effective and clear for the reader if the short stories were combined into one cohesive book.
Stay tuned for Volume Three of Eme Strife’s “The Basilisk’s Creed” to find out what happens to Eli, Matt and the world – both human and spiritual!
