“The Basilisk’s Creed” by Eme Strife is a paranormal romance about a girl named Eli desperately trying to make it in San Francisco despite not having a dime. Through her dreams she meets the most beautiful man she’s ever seen only to find out that he’s not actually a man, he’s a soul reaper.
The story itself was amusing and for me it was also quite unpredictable. I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into when I started reading and from the language (i.e. abundant swearing in church) to the intense sexual content rivaling “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the entire narrative was unexpected.
Eme Strife does a good job of setting up the characters and the paranormal encounter, only to be thrown into a whirlwind when the “shift” occurs.
The story line is intriguing and has a lot of potential, but I was disappointed and surprised by the book’s length. It was much shorter than I expected and turned out be an incredibly quick read that took just a couple of hours. The length wouldn’t have been a problem in and of itself, but as a reader I was left with dozens more questions than I had when I started. It should be noted that this is a series with at least two more books to follow. I’m a fan of series novels, but I have to say I wish this one had been a bit longer to allow me as a reader to become more fully invested in the characters.
“The Basilisk’s Creed” by Eme Strife is a fun, fast-paced paranormal romance, but be warned – be prepared to read all three books in order to follow the story through!
